INDIA… the first image that comes to your mind when you hear about it is its rich cultural heritage of art, colorful festivals and a multifaceted land with loads of warmth and friendliness to offer. That would have been the case a decade ago, over the years we also recognize India for a rising economic giant with rapid developments in the fields of engineering, medicine, manufacturing and design.

The Indian Automobile industry plays a vital role in contributing to the economy, with increasing production rates every year. It is definitely emerging as the undisputed winner in this industry. Although, the Indian design industry is still in a nascent phase, with very few design studios dedicated to automotive design. However, the focus is slowly and convincingly changing towards Automotive Design! And it is with this close observation and belief that a design company, SJ Design Pvt. Ltd. was formed in September’ 2010. It is a dedicated Transportation Design firm with core interest and expertise in Automotive Design.

SJ DESIGN PVT LTD makes it global debut by unveiling its two-door sports coupe project codenamed “SJ1” inspired by the company’s core values of “pure design elegance with undeterred performance”. The company has released the first teaser image of this production concept vehicle, which is characterized by its coupe like features with the luxury of a GT.
As the teaser reveals the vehicle’s design evokes a forward moving muscular stance with a sober and sculpted rear end. It has a balanced composition characterized by a prominent shoulder line, which merges with the muscular yet harmonious rear fender.

All these distinctive lines flow along the side profile of the vehicle and converge at the center of the rear fascia. The rear screen stretches right down to the rear deck and integrates in a sculptured teardrop manner. The profile indicates a powerfully sculpted front fender with dynamic air vents adding to the sheer aggression of the vehicle. The base of the windshield is firm behind the front axle and held by a muscular A- pillar with a sleek roof-line and a formidable shoulder line. These lines swoop together and converge into a beautifully crafted rear end. The quarter glass sections add a touch of class to the profile of the vehicle. Nearly concealed door handles are just one of many exquisite details in the “SJ1”.
The “SJ1” is a 2+2 coupe powered by a 1.9TDI engine coupled with a 5speed manual gearbox and a front wheel drive system powering it.

All in all the SJ1 can be summed up as collage of pure, dynamic and aggressive lines with a blend of sculptured forms producing undeterred performance.

RETURN OF THE CLASSICS

RETRO AVIATOR RACING GOGGLES AND LEATHER HELMET:

Motor Racing started as soon as the first gasoline powered engine was constructed and tested successfully. The first motor race ever organized was held between Paris to Rouen on 22nd July 1894. Hence racing interests grew and more races and sporting events were organized. In 1895, the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris trial was held and is considered the first real race as all competitors started together. Even though the Milwaukee mile is the oldest racing track in the world, the Brooklands in Surrey, England was the first purpose built motor racing venue, which opened in June 1907. After World War 2, a transformation in motor racing took over with high priced road cars like Auto Union, Delahaye and Bugatti with streamlined designs pitted against each other. The passion for speed and thrill of driving with less safety regulations had people experimenting and taking motor racing seriously as a sport.
The “Retro-futurism” theme was inspired by this classic era of motor-sports combining it with a modern design theme. The retro years were a class apart with précised details and uttermost craftsmanship. The design team at SJ DESIGN PVT LTD has made an effort to capture the essence of the classics through this theme. Every detailed object is of prime importance in relating the theme. For example the “Classic Aviator racing goggles and the Leather protective head gear” worn by the driver. As we say, “ Necessity is the mother of all inventions” these glasses originated through the aviation industry worn by warplane pilots to protect themselves from the glare of the sun and were sturdy, rugged and tough. These were later tweaked and used by drivers in the motor racing industry. The frames of these were usually made in brass and were either chrome plated or painted in silver or blackish finish. These were hand stitched to a one -piece padded leather. The designed was later developed as a modern wrap around version of the original “Aviators”

The classic look of the vehicle gets complete with a retro leather helmet, a kind, which was worn by drivers in the motor racing industry during the World war. These helmets come with soft interior padding and were completely hand stitched primarily made of cowhide. They tend to cover the ears of the driver from the wind and noise of the engine at high speeds.
These helmets and racing goggles have created a cult following in the modern years and have made a comeback with many Automotive and motorcycle merchandising companies drawing inspiration by these classic beauties.

Design and History of “swoosh”

There must be very few people who do not recognize the Nike Swoosh logo. With a big arsenal of superstars such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Andre Agassi, Shane Warne, Maria Sharapova, Venus and Serena Williams. This list is pretty long. The company takes its name from the Greek goddess of victory, Nike.

The Nike “Swoosh” is a design created in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University. She met Phil Knight while he was teaching accounting classes and she started doing some freelance work for his company, Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS).

BRS needed a new brand for a new line of athletic footwear it was preparing to introduce in 1972. Knight approached Davidson for design ideas, and she agreed to provide them, charging a rate of $2 per hour.

In June 1971, Davidson presented a number of design options to Knight and other BRS executives, and they ultimately selected the mark now known globally as the Swoosh. Davidson submitted a bill for $35 for her work. (In 1983, Knight gave Davidson a gold Swoosh ring and an envelope filled with Nike stock to express his gratitude.)

The logo represents the wing of the Greek Goddess.The Nike logo is a classic case of a company gradually simplifying its corporate identity as its frame increases. The company’s first logo appeared in 1971, when the word “Nike,” the Greek goddess of victory, was printed in orange over the outline of a checkmark, the sign of a positive mark. Used as a motif on sports shoes since the 1970s, this checkmark is now so recognizable that the company name itself has became superfluous.

The solid corporate logo design check was registered as a trademark in 1995. The Nike logo design is an abstract wing, designed by Carolyn Davidson, was an appropriate and meaningful symbol for a company that marketed running shoes. The “JUST DO IT” slogan and logo design campaign communicated such a strong point of view to their target market that the meaning for the logo design symbol evolved into a battle cry and the way of life for an entire generation. Isn’t it amazing how a small symbol we call a logo design can make a company into a huge success.

RETROFUTURISM

SJD proudly presents to you the “RETROFUTURISM “theme. This theme is an exploration of a new form language, which brings back the harmonious forms of the by-gone era and merges them with a minimal set of aggressive lines. The motor racing of the fifties and sixties, liquid metal forms and animal stances were a few of a broad set of inspirations of the designers at SJD.
The side view of the vehicle displays a long wheelbase and a retro short front overhang with a teardrop design at the rear of the vehicle. The aggressive stance of the vehicle is well complimented by the muscular yet refined fenders and body surfaces. The silhouette of the driver’s cockpit was inspired by the famous Nike “swoosh” and was developed further providing a secure canopy for the Driver. An effort is being made to revive this timeless form language and evolve it into a modern classic.
